The last two years have flashed by in a heartbeat. When we first created Werks, the plan was to make a brand that encapsulated the lifestyle of the driver, my passion for anything with a motor, and the escape that driving represents. When Porsche got in touch with us to get acquainted with the new 718, and share the experience, it was a dream come true.
With the 718, there is no doubt that from conception to final product, Porsche set out to build the ultimate drivers car. Firstly, the 718 is a mid engine car and by eliminating the rear seats, you gain a weight distribution that equals unprecedented handling ability. We were throwing this thing at every type of corner and it never once felt like it wasn't literally glued to the road.
With weight an obvious concern, every component of this car is thought out, pounds are saved wherever possible, and what this means for the experience is that it feels light and nimble to the touch, reacting to every driver input directly.
Ultimately, what I am trying to say here, is that I have had the pleasure of driving many insanely engineered and incredible cars, but at the end of the day driving is about one thing only -- the experience.
The time that we spent with these two 718s was one of the most unforgettable driving experiences we've ever had. We'll be undoubtedly talking about it for years -- those crisp mornings and late nights flying through the twisted Quebec roads.
The sound of that turbo charged Boxster four howling to 7500 rpm and barking on downshift. The feeling of the seat pressing hard against your side as time after time, we would turn in hard into a bumpy unsure corner and the 718 would fly out of the other side completely confident.
We would be filming and hitting the same section of bends, going back and forth to get the best shot, pushing the speed and trying to find the limit of the car, and the 718s were in their element, tackling every challenge and difficult situation with confidence.
A lot of car people spend their lives searching for the perfect car, the perfect drive -- modifying, buying, selling their way through different models. When the sun and stars align, and you have literally the perfect car for the conditions, that is a moment of bliss.
In the two weeks we had the 718s, we had just about every spring condition imaginable, varying road conditions and traffic, and never once did I think this wasn't the best car for the situation.
When a brand like Porsche, with unparalleled racing history, perhaps a collection of the best cars ever built, sets out to build a car for the everyday, for the driver, and they succeed -- the product is what every single petrolhead dreams of - the perfect driving experience.
